WSUS Client FAQ: see WSUS Client FAQ
WSUS Server FAQ: see WSUS Server FAQ

General WUS FAQ:

Q. Where can I download WSUS 3.0 and any prerequisites?

A. You can download WSUS 3.0 from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/wsus).  Prerequisites include MMC 3.0, .NET Framework 2.0 and the Microsoft Report Viewer 2005.

Q. Is WSUS free?

A. Yes, WSUS is a no-cost download from Microsoft. However, you must have a valid Windows Server 2003 license for the WSUS server itself, as well as Windows Client Access Licenses (CALs) for each machine updated by WSUS.  This is an important consideration for organizations that run Windows desktop operating systems, but non-Windows server operating systems such as Novell or Linux.  Additionally, if you decide against the free MSDE/WMSDE database and instead use SQL Server 2000, you also need SQL licenses (either per-processor, or CALs for each WSUS-managed computer).  Be sure to discuss your unique licensing needs with a Microsoft Partner or your Microsoft Account Representative to ensure compliance.

Q. Which products does WSUS keep up to date?

A. (Updated Dec. 18, 2006) WSUS provides updates to the following Microsoft products:

  • Exchange Server
    • 2000
    • 2003 (including IMF v2 updates)
    • 2007 (including antivirus and anti-SPAM updates)
  • Forefront Client Security (Microsoft desktop AV product - BETA)
  • Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA)
    • 2004
    • 2006
    • Firewall Client
  • Microsoft Core XML Services

  • SQL Server
    • 2000
    • 2005
    • SQL Server Feature Pack
  • Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003
  • Visual Studio
    • 2005
  • Windows Live
    • Windows Live Mail Desktop
    • Windows Live Toolbar
  • Windows Small Business Server
    • 2003
  • Windows
    • Windows 2000
    • Windows Defender
    • Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 Dynamic Installer
    • Windows Media Dynamic Installer

    • Windows XP x64 Edition
    • Windows XP

Note: The inclusion of Microsoft Codename Max and Zune in the WSUS Products and Classifications UI is unintentional.

Q. Where can I find the wuau.adm file that includes all the new WSUS options?

A. There are several places to find this file.  It's available on every XP SP2 machine in the WINDOWS\INF folder. Additionally, you can find this file on the WSUS server itself.  Browse to the the %ProgramFiles%\Update Services\Selfupdate\au\x86 folder and locate the wucltui.cab file under your language folder (en=English).  Open the wucltui.cab cabinet file to find the updated wuau.adm file.

Q. How can I roll back to the Automatic Update Client configured for SUS version from the WSUS Server Version?

A. Just point the Automatic Update Client to the SUS Server and it will use the [Self Update] mechanism to revert back as SUS Client instead of WSUS Client.

Q. Where can I download the .NET Framework SP1 for WSUS?

A. WSUS 2.0 requires the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1. Get this from Windows Update, or download it at:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=35326

A. WSUS 3.0 requires the .NET Framework 2.0, which can be found here.

Q. Where can I download the .Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version on Windows 2000 for WSUS?

A. Go to Data Access Downloads on the MSDN Web site to download MDAC.

Q. Where can I download the BITS 2.0/WInHTTP 5.1 updates for WSUS 2.0?

A. WSUS requires BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 packages, which you must download before installing WSUS. There are different versions for Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 as follows:

For Windows Server 2003 RTM (not needed on SP1 systems):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3fd31f05-d091-49b3-8a80-bf9b83261372

For Windows Server 2000:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3ee866a0-3a09-4fdf-8bdb-c906850ab9f2

Q. What is the Minimum Free Disk Space required?

A. Minimum of 6 GB free disk space is recommended to store the WSUS content.

Q. What is the file system required for WSUS?

A. WUS requires that the installation drive and the system partition are formatted with NTFS.

Q. What version of IIS is required for WSUS 2.0? And do I really need IIS, or can I use Apache?

A. If you run WSUS on Windows 2000, you require IIS 5, if you are running WSUS in Windows Server 2003, you require IIS 6. IIS is used to administer your WSUS server. Running WSUS is not supported on any platform other than Windows Server 2000 or 2003, although APIs exist to enable you to build some degree of cross platform support.

Q. What is the required Internet Explorer version?

A. You must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 installed on and any system from which you wish to administer WSUS.

Q. Can we upgrade from the RC version of WSUS 3.0 to the final RTM release ?

A. Yes, a WSUS 3.0 RC server can be upgraded to the final RTM release.

Q. Is WSUS part of Windows Server 2003 SP1 or R2?

A. No, WSUS server is not a part of Windows Server 2003 SP1, nor will it be included in Windows 2003 R2.

Q. Is the WSUS Client included in Windows Server 2003 SP1 and R2?

A. Yes, the updated WSUS client is included in Windows Server 2003 SP1 and Windows 2003 R2.

Q. Does WSUS Support "Administrative Installs" of Office 2003?

A. Yes. According to newsgroup posts, this is supported and works. For more details see here Office Administrative Installs

Q. Can WSUS Servers synchronize with SUS servers?

A. No. The synchronization protocol in WSUS is not compatible with SUS.

Q. Does WSUS effectively replace the need for SMS 2003 Software Updates features?

A. Not necessarily. There are still certain capabilities that SMS 2003 Software Updates provides that WSUS does not provide. Your choice of WSUS vs SMS depends upon what your needs and expectations are as far as maintaining a software update process. Compare feature capabilities using product documentation for more information and clarification. Here's a link with some comparisons http://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/sample/DOMIS/update/2005/02feb/0205fsuttc_ch.htm

Q. Is there a MOM Management Pack for WSUS?

A. Yes, a WSUS 3.0 MOM Management Pack is available.

Q. What can you expect in WSUS 3.0?

A. UPDATED: WSUS 3.0 is available NOW!  Check the top of this FAQ for download links. More information about WSUS 3.0 can be found on the following MVP blogs:

Q. Is WSUS compatible with SQL Server 2005?

A. Yes, WSUS 3.0 supports SQL Server 2005.  WSUS 2.0 Service Pack 1 is required for SQL 2005 support. No prior version is supported by Microsoft with any edition of SQL 2005. Note that SQL 2005 is optional and WSUS 2.0 SP1 still installs MSDE 2000 by default (SP4, which will automatically upgrade an existing instance of SP3 as installed by the original release of WSUS 2.0).

I have a question about the update storage size on upstream servers vs. downstream 'replica' servers.  I'm running out of disk space on the upstream server (has 119GB of updates there) but all 5 of my downstream servers are fine, having only 23gb of update data on each.  My upstream server is set to english only. Why the difference?  Shouldn't they be the same?  I have already run through all of the 'mowing the grass' tools on both upstream and downstream servers.  Thanks!

How can I use downloade patches that are loacated in old server of wsus to new installed server?

Is enough Copy them into wsuscontent's folder  or another setting need?

From goldwein - 4/9/06 3:37 PM

Actually it's not a problem to run WSUS on X64 server, you just need to disable x64 ASP.NET 2.0, set IIS to 32bit mode, install ASP.NET 1.1 with all scriptmaps linked to ASP.NET 1.1 (aspnet_regiis.exe -r) and then all works well.

I recently had to de-install and re-install Office XP. Prior to the de-install there were about 10-15 security updates, hot fixes etc installed for Office on this machine. After the re-install these updates now need to be reapplied. How can I get the WSUS server to recheck this machine and see what it has and hasn't got?

From Athif - 8/10/05 10:10 AM

Hi Virulon,

We have to wait till Microsoft WSUS Team documents those.

Good day,

Can we get a small description on what these undocumented switch do?  Some of them are obvious and when you test them you can see but the others don't do obvious things and it would be nice to know what they are.
