Introduction
This section explains: Target Groups Types of Target Groups How to create Custom Target Groups Placing the Target Groups.
Target Groups
With WSUS you create Target Groups to enable you to deploy different updates to different sets of computers. With SUS 1.0, there was no easy way to send one set of update to one set of machines (e.g. roaming laptops), and another set of patches to a different group of computers (e.g. core servers). With WSUS, you can create Target Groups to enable you to target updates based on the organizational requirement.
By default, there are two target groups: All Computers Unassigned Computers.
Each client computer is added to both these groups by the WSUS server when the client initially contacts the WSUS server. You can move computers out of the Unassigned Computers group.
Setting up target group is a three-step process.
Types of Target Groups
First, you specify how you are going to load computers into the target groups. Here you have two options:
- Server defined targeting you manually create target groups, then add each computer to a target group.
- Client defined targeting You use either Group Policy or Local policy to specify which target group a particular computer is in. You sill have to create the target groups on the WSUS Server
Creating Custom Target Groups
To create a target group: In the WSUS Administration console, click Computers. In the Tasks box, click Create a computer group. -
In the Group name box, type a name for your new computer group, and then click OK
Placing Computers within the Target Groups
Once you have to created the target groups on your WSUS server, you can place computers into the groups. If you are using client defined targeting, WSUS automatically moves the appropriate computers into their defined target groups.
